GLOWE community

Posted by Erdem on November 18, 2008 at 9:54 a.m.

Hello Everyone!

Yesterday we had a unique GLOWE meeting.
First of all, We gave away the Wii to our GLOWE contest winner.
winner GLOWE contest with his Wii

Secondly we had a brainstorm about the GLOWE community and about motivation. We want the GLOWE community to be even more enthousiastic and motivated and because of this, we've decided that everyone should be able to have more input. An example could be that the community should organize the next meetings on their own. A first step in this direction is apointing a new moderator from within the GLOWE community. For his consistent additions to GLOWE and persistancy we asked Tom Claus to become the first new moderator on glowe.org. Congratulations Tom!
In the near future we hope to see the community take over even more and organize events for and by the GLOWE core members!

May the GLOWE surround you all!

GloweMe is live!

Posted by Erdem on August 14, 2008 at 4:45 p.m.

GloweMe has gone live! (in closed Beta)
You can check it out on http://gloweme.com.
GloweMe is the perfect tool for GLOWE developers to spread their widgets. Thanks to a "on the fly building mechanism" GloweMe can provide 1 Java application for 1 widget. Another neat feature is a flash version of every Widget. That means you can preview any widget before downloading it to your cellphone. But the thing that makes GloweMe even more great is that you can embed the flash version of a widget on your own site !
This also means the GloweMe contest can officially begin and you can upload your widgets to gloweme.com and might win a Nintendo Wii console. If you want to participate you can register yourself at http://gloweme.com. For now the site is in closed beta. My guess is that most people will be accepted in registering for GloweMe but the number of registrants is limited for now. But offcourse, if you want to use or download a widget, you don't need to register. (Do please send an extra mail to erdem@glowe.org if you want to compete for the Nintendo Wii. That way I'll know for sure if you want the grand prize or not.)

Tom the webraider, promoted his pukkelpop widget today amongst his friends thru GloweMe. He just embeded his widget on his site like so:

To view this movie, you should download and install the Adobe Flash player

The saved setting block

Posted by Erdem on August 08, 2008 at 4:46 p.m.

The saved setting block, as the name implies, simply saves a setting.
A very interesting block though. It allows you to locally store a single string value that you can re-use later on. Comparible with a cookie it can store a username (and password), but you can also store any value typed in by the user for search queries. On most mobile devices typing isn't the thing you want to do, so if the widget automatically stores the previous text it might come in handy for the next time.

1 <!-- The following code will save the text entered in a VisualTextBox to disk. The next time the widget is started, the textbox will still contain this value. The first time the widget is started, the text "Default" will be entered. -->
2
3 <SavedSetting Name="savedtext" DefaultValue="Default" Input="textbox"/>
4
5 <VisualPage>
6 <VisualContent>
7 <VisualTextBox Name="textbox" Input="savedtext"/>
8 </VisualContent>
9 </VisualPage>

The example here above is offcourse a simple way of implementing a saved setting. A more advanced developer might think of a way to have an unlimited amount(or atleast an amount that's not predefined) of stored values in 1 saved setting block. He/She might be able to do this by using a seperator and concatenating multiple values, another advanced user might not want to put a big load of data on a mobile device and he/she will only store a unique identifier on the device and link it to an online database. This could also be a way of recognizing your user as a developer and knowing your user could always come in handy. In other words, the saved setting block opens up a world of possibilities for your widget!

Posted by Erdem on July 30, 2008 at 8:54 a.m.

Yesterday we had our 4th GLOWE meeting.
During this meeting we gave a recap on building widgets and talked a bit about the future of the GLOWE community. There are quite a few things that will be happening this year.
We'll be having a monthly meeting from september on. every second monday of the month to be exact.
We showed a glimps on how you will be able to distribute your widgets in the near future with Gloweme.
there will also be several upcoming events from september on. More details on all of this soon!

check out yesterdays 3 powerpoint slides here, here and here.
EDIT: I almost forgot something very important. Tom gave a presentation of his pukkelpop widget. You can find his presentation right here.

Another important thing is that we're having a new contest.
Create a widget of your own choice. Multiple widgets can enter the contest.
From 1 september to 15 september you will be able to upload your widget to Gloweme. During this period Gloweme will be in closed beta. But offcourse You can already start building widgets. Then you will only need to upload them.
A winner will be chosen at the end of september and will be announced 29th of september.

The widgets will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Coding Style and Complexity (server widgets, web services used, Services Created)

  • Originality (RSS feeds aren't original :-) )

  • Usefulness

  • Usability

  • Design

  • File size

  • Bandwidth usage

The grand prize is a Nintendo Wii console.

GLOWE specification

Posted by Erdem on July 23, 2008 at 1:22 p.m.

We have been listing a number of enhancements we want to add to the GLOWE specification.
Now we would like you to tell us what things can be better in GLOWE.
Just think, When you are creating a widget, what would help you add a functionality that would help your widget to be better, faster or less complicated?
When adding blocks to the GLOWE specification we carefully consider every possibility but there are a few criteria before we add blocks.
For example, No OS specific functionality. GLOWE is intended to run on multiple platforms.
Also Take in mind that the specification needs to be future proof. That means, no blocks that we might want to remove in the future
Remember the post "GLOWE with the flow" ? Any addition to the GLOWE specification should be as flow friendly as possible. ;-)

This is your chance to be part of the GLOWE future!
We're happy to hear your GLOWE specification comments. :-)

Belgian mobile internet prices

Posted by Erdem on July 09, 2008 at 10:56 a.m.

I just saw an article on T-zine on Belgian mobile internet prices and I didn't want to keep it from you guys!
To give you guys an insight in the prices of the 3 major operators in Belgium.

Proximus
here you have 3 options.
Access Time Option (standaard) € 0,4158 / 5 min (€ 4,99 / uur)
Access Volume Option € 0,50 / 100 KB
Bundel 50 MB € 15 / maand for 50 MB.
After 50 MB you'll pay € 0,90 / MB*.

I find this a bit expensive actually. Especially with a maximum of 50 mb. If you start downloading content regularly on your mobile phone this just isn't going to cut it.

Mobistar
Until recently I could only find data plans for mobile laptops. In the end you still used a sim card and you could put that sim card in your phone to surf the internet, but as far as I know you couldn't make a phone call with that sim card.
Now Mobistar has a new dataplan aspecially for the iPhone. But my guess is you can just use those subscribtions on your other GPRS enabled phones aswell.
30 Euro for 3 hours calling or 300 text messages and 200 mb of data
45 Euro for 6 hours calling or 600 text messages and 500 mb of data
60 Euro for 9 hours calling or 900 text messages and 1 GB of data

Base
if you surf very irregularly you pay 2,5 Euro for 1 mb
5 Euro for 10 mb
10 Euro for 200 mb
25 Euro for 2 GB
The first three are available in prepaid the last only if you have a subscription.

My personal favorit is Base because of a fair prepaid offer of 200mb for 10 Euro. I especially like the idea of freedom of choice. If I don't want to spend any mony on phonecalls or mobile internet next month I can do that. Mobistar and Proximus do both allow faster connections, but that's only if you are in an area where UMTS is supported.See here on this image for mobistar! and here for Proximus!
Probably the real battle for cheap mobile data plans is about to start, but the above will give you an idea of what you can use. You should also take in mind Mobistar and Proximus both have a dataplan for mobile laptops which are cheaper than their mobile phone dataplans. The only disadvantage you'll have is that you probably won't be able to phone using those simcards.

GLOWE java is available in beta

Posted by Erdem on July 04, 2008 at 11:04 a.m.

Like the headline says. You can download the beta version of the GLOWE client at our download section or from http://sln.tc/e7.
This is the first version of the java GLOWE client with visual items implemented. Thanks to this version your widgets will work on many more cellphones.
Have fun testing it and let us know if there are any problems! :-)

Dapper

Posted by Erdem on July 02, 2008 at 4:55 p.m.

Very cool website I heard of today, from Geert.
Thanks to dapper you can convert html websites to xml or some xml based format such as RSS.
This is great if you want to avoid using regular expressions for your widget. Just select your website, run it thru dapper and you'll have an xml feed of the html website. You can even name your input fields with variable names. Extremely handy if you have a widget for searching on a website.
Check out the video here!

Fixes and updates 26th of June

Posted by Jgeskens on June 26, 2008 at 2:28 p.m.

Hi everyone.

The Glowe website has been updated. We pushed the following changes:

  • The forum now works with BBCodes now.

  • In order to make the previous change, we had to change every (!) forum post to the new BBCode syntax. Don't worry, we didn't change or censor any post. That means that badly written posts were not fixed. The good news is that your pieces of code are now fully syntax highlighted!

Thank you for your patience while we were working on it!

Mobile Widgets

Posted by Citylive on June 10, 2008 at 10:28 a.m.

What on earth is it anyways ?
A few years ago nobody knew what widgets were. People, who knew, probably thought of it as a small mechanical device or control. And a widget is also a mechanical device or control but if you use the word "widget" today, you usually mean something else.
Today, widgets are to be found everywhere.
Generally speaking a widget contains a little piece of code, multiple widgets can be combined together in 1 place and they are easy to develop.

To run a widget you'll need an environment or engine to run them in. In the history, widgets came a long way. Look at the below screenshot of the widget workshop from the nineties.

But if you think widgets as we know them today are new. You should think twice.
Desktop widgets have been around for a while.

Here below you can see the desktop widget timeline until today (from nail kennedy his blog).

click on the image to see full size.

And here below you can see a picture of the Widget Workshop from 1996.

click on the image to see full size.

The next steps in widgets are no doubt mobile widgets.
Widgets will truly come to their right on mobile devices. Because with mobile devices you have a small screen and widgets are small. You don't want to type in a lot. Widgets are small specific predefined applications. Always with you, not much typing to do to get the functionality you desire. Just one click to get them up and running. Easy and fast. Widgets are popular today on your desktop device, but they will become far more useful on your mobile device.

When creating widgets, what better way is there than having an open language, a language easy to use, a simple way of getting your content on your phone and everybody else their phone.
Thanks to GLOWE, today these things are possible.
Thanks to GLOWE anyone can become a mobile developer and create great widgets.
Best of all, it's free and open to use by everyone.

GLOWE meeting 2nd of June

Posted by Erdem on June 03, 2008 at 9:58 a.m.

We had a GLOWE meeting yesterday.
During this session we brainstormed for several hours about what we can do with GLOWE. A lot of crazy ideas were thought up. But there were also a lot of good ideas.
Check the forum for the ideas with the red stickers on them.
A message to the GLOWE Core. Respond to the projects that you would like to take on. That way groups can form and we can take on problems together.

here some pictures from yesterday:

Gotta have pizza !

All our good ideas on post it's. the post it's with the red stickers are the more realistic and original ideas

Don't be an evil developer

Posted by Erdem on May 23, 2008 at 8:48 a.m.

Usability is very important when creating software. In the nineties there were a few million internet users, and most of those people were geeks. Today there are more than a billion internet users and most of these people don’t have a technical background. Unless you’re making applications for fun, games or applications replacing intimacy, most people don’t want to use software, how great it may be.

An example may be that when someone buys a lottery ticket, that person is not buying a piece of paper. He’s buying hope. If someone is buying toilet paper, he’s not buying just paper because it looks nice or stands well between the furniture. That person is buying hygiene. This is the same with software. People aren’t using software because it’s just cool. Most people don’t want to use software but they want to have used software. It’s a big difference. With software they want a solution to their problem. And those people also want the software to “just work”. When you go to technical conferences today, you may or may not be dazzled by new possibilities. With some new technologies for .Net for example you can create very beautiful interfaces with 3D effects and crazy colors. But do you need them?

An example: Google earth has a very cool feature when you look for a location it zooms in to the earth. The first time you might think this is so cool to see. But the 10th time you’ll be thinking, hurry up now, it’s taking 20 seconds to finish it’s zooming in. On the other hand, if someone in a power plant can graphically see the level of some device in his central with 3D images and video he’ll be helped a lot, because it’s easier to look at 3D moving images than just looking at numbers.

Use your ideas for good and not evil. These ideas’ come from David Platt, a speaker at the Devdays in Amsterdam and .Net professor. The GLOWE core team of course completely agrees that usability is important for end users and we even take it a step further. We also believe solutions should be easy, especially for mobile, because today, creating solutions for mobile isn’t always as easy as it should be.

A part of our GLOWE mission is to enable people to easily create personal and relevant widgets that can be used anywhere. Usability is very important for the end user, but we also believe this usability should also exist in more than 1 level, at the level of the end user, but also with the person creating the widget.

Looks like Microsoft has its own developer days. They must be trying to act like GLOWE...
just kidding... Tomorrow some of our GLOWE crew members are going to the DevDays in Amsterdam. We'll be making some news posts about that soon.

Site Updates

Posted by Erdem on May 20, 2008 at 10:42 a.m.

When necessary we'll be updating the site at the beginning of the week. SuperMonday, as Jef calls it. It is the day that updates happen. In the last update some bugs have been fixed and on the homepage you'll see more documentation on the GLOWE specification. If you have any suggestions or bug reports you can post them on the forum.

greets,

Here's a complete changelog of this week...

  • Documentation added

  • Documentation button add to the home page

  • List of posts in the community tab is reduced to the titles of the posts

  • The number in de stats on the home page are now clickable

  • CSS bug solved in the community tab (too much widespace)

  • Every widget now has a 'view source' link which you can use to view the source online and a 'download source' link which will force a download of the widget

The GLOWE engine

Here's a cool drawing from Davy where you can see how one XML file (widget) can work on any platform when the GLOWE engine is implemented. Look at how logic can be moved to a server in order to throw away heavy lifting from the widgets. You can also see that almost anything on the web can be parsed and used in your widget. Very cool :-)

New GLOWE logo

Posted by Erdem on May 07, 2008 at 1:54 p.m.

Hello everyone,

We're looking for a new GLOWE logo. We've put a design contest online here. We've noticed our current logo is a bit hard to use when it comes to making t-shirts. So we're looking for a new simple, recognizable and nice looking logo for GLOWE. Anyone can participate.

Show off your widgets to your friends

Posted by Erdem on April 30, 2008 at 10:55 a.m.

Though glowe.org is a place for widget developers, you might want to share your widgets with your friends. This is actually quite simple.
You can for example just put a link on your site to the widget client and tell people to give in your username after installing the client. That means that they will see the widgets that you decide for them to see.

Example: I log in with Widgetdude at glowe.org and add 2 widgets to "my widgets"(garfield and glowe chat), a friend of mine downloads the widget client, types in the username "Widgetdude" and sees the 2 widgets I've uploaded. When I add another widget to "my widgets" and my friend updates his widgets on his mobile phone, he will see that widget as well.
handy if you want to show off your work :-)

GLOWE with the flow

Posted by Erdem on April 29, 2008 at 10:50 a.m.

A major plus in GLOWE is Dataflow. You can perfectly create a widget with static information but this isn’t the way most people will want to create widgets. Thanks to the dataflow blocks of GLOWE you can create dynamic widgets without having to worry about client or server side coding. Any REST based website or webservice can be parsed with GLOWE.
In the picture below you can see a schematic dataflow.
First you read in data with the Datareader and then it’s being filtered with the Datafilter and then showed on screen with Visual items. When an action occurs the Datareader might get different parameters and will retrieve it’s data from another webpage/service.

Mobilewebcamp GLOWE meeting

Posted by Erdem on April 28, 2008 at 10:23 a.m.

The GLOWE crew was at the mobilewebcamp saturday. Together with a few core GLOWErs we made the day a succes.
Several people came to attend davy's hands-on lab in widget building. Many of them where curious people from the webcamp.
The same day our website was publicly launched. Cool to see was that there we're nearly always people sitting at the table, messing around in the widget editor, and if you wanted to take a break you could attend another session. Must say that the widget building contest was a succes aswell. In the picture below you can see the winner Tom(holding his phone), the runner up Andy(with the goatie) and in the middle Erdem from the GLOWE crew. Tom left the webcamp with 11 movie tickets in his pocket and he's been uploading widgets like crazy. Well done to Andy aswell, he had his widget working but just missed the timeline in having a nice style.
Also thanks to everyone attanding our GLOWE sessions. We'll be having a GLOWE meeting again in the very near future. Hope we'll see you guys there again.
you can see the full flickr stream of the webcamp here
